Humility in Leadership

How can a leader be bold and humble at the same time?

  1. Approach the ideas of others with humility– look for the 10% in every idea that is good.

  2. Ask great questions; develop the skill of curiosity.

  3. Surround yourself with people who are smarter than you.

  4. Be bold in sharing your gifts and talents, and humble in accepting praise for them.

  5. Develop your emotional intelligence by always watching out for the weaknesses that are the flipside of your strengths.

  6. Be authentic – admit when you mess up and share what you have learned from it. (But no “humble-brag”!)

These are not easy achievements. The foundational skill for all of these is to catch the saboteurs (mental models) in your head that hold you back, and develop the wisdom that you need to improve your performance, relationships and well-being. That is inside work, but it shows in good leaders. As William Ury wrote, “How could I expect to influence others if I couldn’t influence myself first?”
